William Morris’ Willow pattern might appear to us ad the epitome of British chintz. But behind this apparent comfort, there is another story. One of politics, science fiction and the possibility of imagining other kinds of world. Can we 'read' Morris' pattern as part of both his politics and of his interest in design as a point between history and the future.
Blurred Willow is a wallpaper that reclaims Morris from the world of chintz, instead setting it as a form of political fiction that is part sci-fi (like his time travelling novel News From Nowhere) and part scenographic political statement, as if its image of foliage was the fulfilment of his desire to disrupt the structures of Victorian society.
